How the UIU Online Program works
Students who have registered for a class/classes for an upcoming UIU Online Term will receive a letter from UIU Administration confirming that their enrollment has been processed. The class/classes they are enrolled in will be specified in that letter. Students should review the letter to check that they are enrolled in the correct class and should note their Class ID (i.e. BA306_01). Students typically receive additional materials in their “Welcome” packet that will help them to get started.
Upon completion of enrollment processing by UIU Administration, the Technical Support Team will be notified and a student’s account will be set up on the UIU Online servers. Once this has been completed, NEW students will receive an email from the UIU Support Team with their UserName/Password. This information is needed to log on to the UIU Online servers.
Accessing Classes on the UIU Online Servers
Upper Iowa University Online classes are held in virtual classrooms created from private newsgroups that only faculty, the administrators, and students can access. These “rooms” are located on the private news servers that you access only by providing your user UserName and Password when you log into your account.
As soon as a student receives their UserName and Password from the UIU Support Team, they will have access to their UIU Mail account and the UIU Community Groups. However, students do NOT have access to UIU Classes until the day before the new Term starts.
Students can access their UIU Online Mail/Community Groups/Classes by using either
Outlook Express (OE)/Windows Mail(for Vista) or Outlook Web Access (OWA).
Students can use either one or a combination to the two venues. They are simply two different ways to access classes – all class content will be available in both.
The tutorials below will assist you in using Outlook Express and Outlook Web Access.
You will find additional help by clicking on the FAQ’s link above OR by entering keywords in the “Search UIU Website” function you see at the top of this page.

Why Outlook Express (OE)/Windows Mail?
Using Outlook Express/Windows Mail is a good option if a student has limited or slow
Internet connectivity. In OE and Windows Mail, email and class postings are downloaded to the
user's computer, allowing the user to then work offline. In an offline mode, a user can read
the downloaded postings, compose new postings and replies, then connect to the Internet to
send the postings and receive new ones.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5, 6.0. By default, Outlook Express is installed on the task bar as an icon and on the Start Menu (under Start > Programs > Outlook Express) when Internet Explorer is installed.
Note: Outlook Express is a different program from the Microsoft Outlook e-mail client.
For convenience, UIU has designed Outlook Express Manager (OXM) software that creates your class, email and community accounts in OE with the right settings.
You can download this software by clicking on the Downloads link at the top of this page.

Windows Mail is an e-mail and newsgroup client included in recent versions of Microsoft Windows. It is the successor to Outlook Express. It has almost the same features that are in OE except the concept of identities.
Note: The Outlook Express Manager (OXM) software is not compatible with Windows Vista.

Why Outlook Web Access?
With Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access, you can use a Web browser to access your UIU Mail, UIU Classes and UIU Community Groups from any computer with an Internet connection. In fact, you can do most of the same things you can do with Outlook Express, such as read and send Mail, read and create Class postings and organize contacts.
You can use Outlook Web Access with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator Web browsers from many UNIX, Apple Macintosh, or Microsoft Windows-based computers.
